Broomfield STEM / Broomfield Robotics Club is a non-profit 501(c)3 educational organization founded in 2023, with its story beginning in 2022 with the formation of the BroomBots FIRST Tech Challenge team. Its mission is “To make quality, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning accessible, inclusive and fun for all.” The organization is guided by core values of Belonging, Collaboration, Curiosity, Innovation, Impact, and Play, and states that all are welcome in Broomfield STEM. It provides competitive FIRST robotics programs for students in grades 2–12 through the Broomfield Robotics Club and has expanded from one FTC team to multiple FIRST Lego League Challenge teams and FIRST Tech Challenge teams.
Broomfield STEM / Broomfield Robotics Club originated with four teenagers, two Ukrainian refugees, donors, and a church providing basement space. It serves students including those who are autistic, have ADHD, or are learning English as a second language. The organization has piloted a Preschool Play Day event for a Saturday in the fall and spring, is planning to expand its Early Engineers curriculum, and is adding Coding club and Builders club options for 3rd–5th and 6th–8th graders. It is expanding FIRST Lego League Challenge with two new teams and FIRST Tech Challenge with one additional team, and is transitioning to paid staff and planning for its own space.
Broomfield STEM / Broomfield Robotics Club is funded in part by the City and County of Broomfield, with sponsors that include Infinitus Pie, WorkDay, and Top of the Line Chiropractic. It works with local engineers, teachers, and volunteers, and operates in Broomfield, CO and the surrounding communities. Inclusion is one of its top priorities, and it states that it strives for belonging and community for all students regardless of race, economic background, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, country of origin, language, or special learning needs.
As a competitive robotics organization, Broomfield STEM / Broomfield Robotics Club notes that the initial BroomBots robot qualified for the Colorado State Championship in its first year, and that in their first season, the teams each won an award at their very first tournament. The organization identifies its leadership team as including board members Dr. Karoline Jarr, Kevin Fattor, Arian Lalezari, and Anne Carpenter, along with staff roles of Executive Director, Director of Program Development, and Administrative Assistant.
