Becoming Your Personal Best is a program that includes activities connected to gymnastics and features stories from Olympians and Paralympians. The program is built around a nine-part, on-demand video series that focuses on resiliency skills and is supported by comprehensive program materials and lesson plans for adults who work with kids in any capacity. It is a program of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum and is produced in partnership with the Colorado Health Foundation.

Becoming Your Personal Best is built to help today’s youth as they face challenges by connecting them to Olympian and Paralympian mentors who share their own stories of resiliency. The program focuses on self-identity, mindset, problem-solving, perseverance, relationships, and confidence, and it is built around the resiliency stories of Olympians and Paralympians. It provides materials and lesson plans for teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, caretakers, and any adults who work with kids, and it includes professional development modules for educators. The program also offers a TV series for families and caretakers that outlines ways to live more resilient lives and support young people.

Becoming Your Personal Best is a program of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum and is produced in partnership with the Colorado Health Foundation. It is the recipient of the 2022 Anthem Awards, with a Bronze in Community Engagement and a Silver in Awareness. Facilitators need internet access, a device to view the videos, an educator or youth leader or parent to lead each module, and a printer.

Michelle Dusserre Farrell leads the program as the Colorado Chapter President of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Alumni Association. She is a 1984 Olympic silver medalist in gymnastics and a 2006 inductee into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Her background includes 12 years as a gymnastics coach at the club and college level, service on the Athletes Advisory Council for USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, and work in organizational sport performance for the USOPC and international sport organizations. She has worked a combined total of seven Olympic and Paralympic Games, including three for NBC Sports television in the research division, and she oversees athlete engagement for the U.S. Olympic City Task Force. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition from Arizona State University, a Masters of Basic Science with an emphasis in exercise science from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and she is a registered dietitian.

Testimonials describe the curriculum as well put together with multiple scaled versions that can be used in many settings, including accelerated, more self-guided lessons. Parents and educators note that modules are broken down into self-identity, mindset, problem solving, perseverance, relationships, and confidence, and that the program uses athletes’ stories and videos to model concepts and vocabulary related to growth mindset. Feedback highlights high production value, a variety of activities, project-based and learner-focused work, and adaptable activities that can be used by individuals or groups. Educators report that students found the videos interesting and engaging, with some giving them a 9.5 out of 10 for relevancy, interest, and “coolness factor,” and some teachers mention using the curriculum for topics such as self-care, life skills, and socio-emotional skills.
