Challenger Learning Center of Colorado is a not-for-profit organization and part of a global network of more than 40 Challenger Learning Centers that use space-themed simulated learning environments. Its space-based learning environment features a Mission Control Center modeled after NASA’s Johnson Space Center, a Space Transporter simulator, a Spacecraft/Space Station simulator, a 40-seat planetarium called the Mikkelson Planetarium, and a dedicated Maker Space in a purpose-built 10,500 square foot facility. Challenger Center was founded in 1986, and Challenger Learning Center of Colorado opened its doors in 2002. The organization serves about 32,000 learners annually from the Rocky Mountain Region, surrounding states, and across the country. In partnership with Academy District 20, Challenger Colorado moved to its purpose-built facility, with Academy District 20 providing the facility and other support to their operations. The mission of the Challenger Learning Center of Colorado is to inspire and engage K–12 students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subject areas, using space as the motivating element. One testimonial from Ingrid in District 49 describes it as one of the best hands-on ways to experience STEM education and her favorite one-day field trip because it gets students excited to learn about real-life application of what they discuss in class and how STEM impacts everything in their lives.
