The Art Students League of Denver opened its doors in 1987 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported by private donations, tuition, foundation grants, and the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. Its mission is to empower people to experience the joy of art in their own way, with core values of Community, Inclusiveness, Learning & Development, Unique Self-Exploration, and Professional Instruction. Youth classes and camps are available for kids ages 6–13, and Teen Studio is open to teens ages 14–17 and follows a model that gives teens the tools to create what they want on their own terms.

In all studio classes, instructors individualize learning in a style that fits their personal philosophy and integrate demonstrations, study of master artists, and group critiques. Participants study with regionally and nationally recognized working artists in a wide selection of media. The program states that it believes art is for everyone, that giving kids the tools to create freely is fundamental to a healthy and happy childhood, and that spaces for creating are fun, non-competitive, and non-outcome based so kids can experience a full range of artistic creation.

Community engagement with diverse communities is described as central to the Art Students League of Denver’s mission and is carried out through partnerships with performing arts groups, public schools, museums, other art centers, libraries, and community centers across the metro area. The organization states that it will be a central hub for artistic self-expression that fosters conversation throughout the Denver metro area and beyond.

Supervised care is offered to include a lunch period between morning and afternoon camps for children registered for both sessions, and lunch is not provided, so each student brings their own. Parents or guardians must escort their children to and from their assigned studio unless the child is registered for supervised care for summer camps, and for youth aged 11 and older, parents or guardians may sign a waiver allowing the child to sign themselves in and out. By registering a child, parents authorize the use of the child’s artwork and/or photo in future Art Students League of Denver marketing or promotional materials, and parents who do not want photos taken are instructed to contact the registration team so the child’s account can be updated.
