Steve & Kate's Camp describes its mission as giving campers the freedom to choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and states that this experience is also a kind of training ground for life where they will need to be empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The program notes that campers choose their own activities and plan their own days, and that parents can buy any number of day passes, attend camp any time, and receive automatic refunds for any unused passes. The camp states that all-inclusive rates include all camp hours from 8:00am to 6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child, and that families receive automatic full refunds for unused purchased Day Passes and partial refunds for underused Summer Passes.

The program describes long camp hours, included meals and snacks, and the option to drop children off and pick them up at any time during the camp day. It also states that additional state-required paperwork must be submitted for every child before their first day of camp, and that registered families receive a link to a virtual camp orientation with details on local drop-off and pick-up procedures, daily check-in and check-out, and what to bring or not bring.

According to the camp’s history, Steve and Kate Susskind created the summer camp in 1980 after seeing kids’ independence slipping away. The organization notes that, although Steve and Kate no longer work there, their vision is carried out through its vice presidents, Kevin and Mike. Steve & Kate's Camp reports that it operates more than 90 locations from Manhattan to Manhattan Beach, offers summer day camps for kids aged 4–12 (with some states having slightly higher age requirements), runs holiday camps for kids ages 4–12, and offers mentorship programs for children aged 14 and 15, with availability varying by location.

The camp states that its Colorado sites follow all local water restrictions and conservation requirements and, in partnership with host schools, adjust programming as needed to support safe and responsible operations. Testimonials about Steve & Kate's Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory; Apple’s Hot News; Variety magazine; The Washington Post; and the Chicago Tribune.
