Kids Do It All: Summer Music-Theatre Camp
University Center for the Arts (UCA), 1400 Remington St, Fort Collins, CO 80524
About
Kids Do It All: Summer Theatre Camp is a week-long day camp where campers take part in playwriting, acting, performance, improv, improv games, choreography, movement, voice, singing, dancing, music composition, and songwriting. Campers also work with props and scene design, explore theatrical expression through movement, costume, and storytelling, and may use simple costume pieces put together at home, such as a cardboard box chest piece or a cape made from an old bed sheet. Each session results in three original 10–15-minute plays created and performed by the campers, and campers also explore museums in and around the UCA.
• Ages: 7–13 years old
• Schedule: Week-long day camp sessions during June and July
• Price: Tuition: $455 for the first registration; $415 for each additional camper/registration. Scholarships are typically based on financial need, bringing the total to $200 for one session of KDIA.
The camp meets Monday–Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., ending with a free performance for friends and family. Kids Do It All is an annual musical-theatre children’s theatre program with a repeat/enrollment cap that requests each camper attend no more than two weeks of KDIA. Faculty and students from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance guide up to 50 children through the entire process of theatre.
The program’s mission states that Kids Do It All is about the process, not the product, and that KDIA embraces a “yes and” mindset and aims to show kids how creativity blossoms when they share, play, and create as a group. The mission also states that the program wants kids to leave camp knowing how to collaborate, how to structure a story, how to engage with their imaginations, how to work as an ensemble, and that it teaches problem-solving, tolerance, and cooperation. The program describes a supportive, collaborative environment with enthusiastic CSU students as teachers and counselors, and it has an inclusivity policy stating that all are welcome and that bullying and name-calling will not be tolerated.
The leadership team includes Director Debbie Swann, Senior Instructor of Theatre; Music Director/Composer Hannah Swanson, Instructor of Collaborative Piano; and KDIA Founder Walt Jones, Professor of Theatre, Retired, and Founder of Kids Do It All (KDIA).
