Feel the Beat was founded in 2016 to ensure Deaf, Hard of Hearing, disabled, and nondisabled individuals can learn, move, and express themselves through accessible, adaptive dance education. Feel the Beat’s classes are led by instructors with extensive backgrounds in dance and music education. All classes are taught in ASL and English, use visual descriptions, and offer modifications for physical differences, and 1:1 assistance is available for those who benefit from it. The studio features a one-of-a-kind vibrotactile dance floor that transforms sound into gentle, full-body vibration using embedded bone-conduction technology, and it is designed with multiple layers for comfort, mobility, and sensory access for dancers in socks, shoes, or wheelchairs. Classes are available to both youth and adults, and programs are curated for all backgrounds, abilities, and age groups, including workshops that introduce new dance styles and focus on dance fundamentals, rhythm, counting, and choreography with adaptations for diverse learning styles and physical needs. The program offers 8-class and 16-class punch cards that expire 365 days after purchase if unused, and each student uses their own punch card. The first class is free for new participants.
Feel the Beat is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit and dance studio. The organization was founded by Jari and Julia, who met in 2016 while teaching in a multiple needs classroom. The program also offers traveling classes in Colorado Springs and is starting a waitlist for youth classes at Colorado Movement Lab. Testimonials from parents, educators, and community partners describe students enjoying the vibrotactile dance floor, ASL accessibility, and adaptive offerings, and note that the organization’s work and dance floor are described as unlike anything else by supporters such as Alan Bersten from Dancing with the Stars.
