Niwot Youth Sports is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing recreational and competitive sports experiences that promote teamwork, build self-esteem, and increase skill knowledge for kids ages 4 to 18. The organization currently offers both recreational and competitive team sports and fields dozens of teams in baseball, softball, basketball, and flag football, serving over 500 boys and girls in baseball and softball, over 250 in basketball, and 150 in flag football. NYS baseball leagues are divided between a Recreation Program and a Competitive Program, with T-Ball/Coach Pitch leagues for ages 4 to 8 (Bubblegum, Rookie, and AA) and Player Pitch leagues for ages 9 to 18 (AAA, Majors, Seniors, and High School Rec). Softball provides an opportunity for girls age 4½ to 18 to play and learn softball in a fun and positive environment while building self-esteem, learning teamwork, and stressing good sportsmanship, and all girls are welcome to play softball. The recreational basketball program is for players in grades 1 through 6 and promotes the principles of good sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect, and in past years a Competitive Basketball program has been offered for more serious players in grades 5 through 8 who are interested in playing in leagues that travel to other gyms in the northern front range. The NFL Flag Football League is a premier youth flag football league for boys and girls ages 5 to 12, and this coed program is non-contact, offers continuous action, and focuses on developing skills and learning lessons in teamwork. Recreational soccer is geared toward children ages 4 to 8 to get them interested in soccer, learn aspects of the game, get acquainted with teamwork, and have fun, and soccer participants are grouped with peers of similar age and skill set rather than on uneven teams.
Niwot Youth Sports originally began as sandlot softball in the late 1960s. Almost 10 years later in 1978, the organization became known as Gunbarrel Lefthand Valley Recreation Association, Inc., and in 1991, GLVRA became Niwot Youth Sports, Inc. Over time, NYS has grown into a comprehensive youth sports organization that serves kids in the Niwot, Gunbarrel, and South Longmont areas on a year-round basis and has grown to serve most communities in the St. Vrain School District and Boulder County at large. Players from the St. Vrain Valley School District are placed on Niwot Youth Sports–based teams that play against other NFL flag football teams in the Boulder County area. Volunteer contributions are emphasized as making Niwot Youth Sports “so great,” and there are opportunities for sponsorship by individuals or businesses.
The leadership team includes Jon Hangge (President and Director of Soccer), Galen Scheidenhelm (Vice President and Director of Competitive Baseball), Jessica Walker (Executive Director and Director of Basketball), Kelly Strong (Director of Outreach & Sponsorships), Glenn Wager (Treasurer, Director of Softball, and Director of Fields and Facilities for Monarch Park Complex), Amy Batmazian (Secretary), Ben Bernstein (Director of Baseball), Adam Robinson (Director of Flag Football), Murphey McCloy (Commissioner of Majors and Seniors), and Brian Dean (Umpire Coordinator). There are also open positions for Director of Marketing, Director of Fields and Facilities (Biff Warren Complex), Director of Competitive Basketball, and Commissioner of Bubblegum, Rookie & AA.
