About
Sunflower Farm Educational Programs include hands-on activities such as feeding and care of animals, gardening, art, climbing haybales, playing on old tractors, sand play, and water play. Children can pet goats, sheep, and horses, jump from hay bale to hay bale, swing under the cottonwoods, experience the playhouses and sandboxes, explore the tree forts, brush the llama, soar down the slides, climb on the spider web and old tractors, peruse the airplane, go sled-riding on the sled hill, and toast marshmallows over the bonfire.
• Ages: 3–12 years old
• Schedule: Farmfest Summer Music Evenings are held most Wednesday evenings from May through August and on select Fridays in September and October.
Sunflower Farm Educational Programs take place at an Educational Demonstration Farm that is a working farm open to the public to visit or hear local music, with all farm activities and animals open to explore during Farmfest Summer Music Evenings and food trucks available at those events. The programs include a licensed Preschool referred to as “Farm School,” nature-based, farm-integrated Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs, and a School-Age Farm Program described as a self-directed learning experience without a set curriculum, all integrating farm, nature, and animals to foster curiosity, exploration, and play. Sunflower Farm was officially designated as an Educational Demonstration Farm on May 24, 2018, after fifteen years of community significance, and its Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten Program were founded in 2005. The leadership team includes Executive Director Liz Napp, Director of Educational Programs Sophie Eberle, and Farmfest Manager Katy Jergensen Gloege. The mission of Sunflower Farm is “To cultivate an appreciation for farming, nature and our sustainable future by providing a place of mindful education and memories through daily farm routines, experiential play, family time together and stillness,” and it seeks to sustainably grow nourishing foods for the community and provide food to the community. During Farmfest Public Hours, visitors have direct contact with farm animals including goats, sheep, cows, a horse, chickens, peacocks, and llamas, and one Farmfest guest, Anne Judd, described the experience by saying, “My image of heaven looks just like this.”
