Expedition Backpacking Colorado - Expedition Camp is a one-week program where campers spend their days backpacking, hiking, and camping in a backcountry setting. Campers practice pitching tents, using backpacking tents, cooking meals on backcountry stoves, managing gear, treating water, and using a map and compass. The program also includes teambuilding, games during downtime, and stories around the campfire, with campers sleeping in backpacking tents and carrying group equipment, food, and personal gear, including an additional 10–25 lbs of food or group gear.

During the week, campers follow a structured daily routine that may include a 7:00 AM wake-up, morning circle, breakfast, packing up camp, hiking with an on-trail lunch, more afternoon hiking, setting up camp in the evening, dinner, an evening circle, and tent time or bedtime around 8:00 PM. Campers spend up to six hours hiking and exploring terrain, with routes that may include longer hike days and layover days with light day packs to nearby peaks or high alpine lakes. They learn backpacking basics such as compact cooking, cleaning and sleeping gear, bear protocols, and water treatment systems, and all water is filtered from area sources for drinking, hand washing, and food preparation.
The program focuses on backpacking best practices and interpersonal skills, with every activity starting with a discussion about risks, prevention, and response. Campers take turns cooking and cleaning up meals for the group and may spend some time alone reflecting during a brief, structured “solo” experience, which varies based on the trip. Campers learn Leave No Trace principles, including how to properly dispose of human waste through burying in the ground or carrying it out, and there is no access to showers, toilets, or running water, with all water filtered from area sources.
Expedition Backpacking Colorado - Expedition Camp is rated as Difficulty Rating 2 – Single Sport Specialty and Wilderness Rating 3 – Backcountry Wilderness Camping, with total camp hours listed as 125.
