About
MVHR Community Horse Programs include one-on-one programs, birthday parties, team building, volunteer opportunities, and tours. Participants can take part in activities such as horse care, grooming, leading, pony rides, groundwork, liberty work with horses, and service and grooming. The programs also offer Equine Explorer Camp, Summer Day Camps, Mini Horse Heroes, Horse Heroes Day Camp, Horse Glamour Day Camp, H.O.P.E. Day Camp, and Helping Hands Workshops that cover topics like Basic Horse First Aid, Nutrition, Horse Behavior & Body Language, and Basic Horsemanship Skills (Ground Work & Liberty).
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Spring break Equine Explorer Camps run as 3-day or 4-day camps, and Summer Day Camps are offered on multiple 3-day sessions with transportation on specific dates.
• Price: Horse Heroes Day Camp costs $60 per day per child; Horse Glamour Day Camp costs $70 per day per child; H.O.P.E. Day Camp costs $85 per day per child.
Equine Explorer Camp includes an “equine explorers journal” with worksheets, and activities such as groundwork, leading horses, grooming horses, learning horse body language, learning horse anatomy, learning horse nutrition, learning basic horse terminology and tools, and other hands-on activities and worksheets. Mini Horse Heroes is designed for kids 3–5 years old and their parents or caregivers, including almost 3-year-olds who are accustomed to a preschool setting, and includes horse care, grooming, leading, and a pony ride. Horse Heroes Day Camp includes service and grooming with horses, learning to lead and halter a horse, horse crafts, and games. Horse Glamour Day Camp includes a special groom on the horses, use of glitter and ribbons on horses, a parade, and a glamour horse craft. H.O.P.E. Day Camp includes groundwork and liberty work with horses, and all programs focus on developing a participant’s sense of H.O.P.E., which stands for Heart, Opportunity, Perseverance, and Empathy.
Helping Hands Workshops in 2026 are scheduled as follows: Feb. 28 for Basic Horse First Aid, Mar. 14 for Nutrition, Mar. 28 for Horse Behavior and body language, and Apr. 4 for Basic Horsemanship Skills (Ground Work & Liberty). SOROCO Spring Break Equine Explorer Camp is a 3-day camp held Wednesday March 25, Thursday March 26, and Friday March 27, with transportation provided from Yampa. ECSD Spring Break Equine Explorer Camp is a 4-day camp held Monday April 20 through Thursday April 23, with transportation provided from Wolcott. Summer Day Camps with transportation from Wolcott in Eagle County run June 9–11, June 16–18, June 23–25, July 28–30, and August 4–6, and Summer Day Camps with transportation from Yampa in Routt County run May 26–28, June 2–4, July 7–9, July 14–16, and July 21 and 23. Mountain Valley Horse Rescue hours are Monday through Sunday from 9am–7pm, and the ranch is open to guests 10am–2pm most days and by appointment at other times. One-on-one programs, birthday parties, team building, and volunteer and tour opportunities for adults and groups are available by appointment.
Mountain Valley Horse Rescue (MVHR) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to rehabilitation and rehoming of equines in need, while working to reduce the cases of unwanted equines through education and outreach. MVHR’s Community Horse Programs are in part made possible by DJ & Johanna Jensen with DJensen Electric, and 2025 MVHR School Group Programs are made possible in part by Alan-Bradley Windows & Doors. MVHR helps reduce equine abuse and neglect through education and outreach and through relationships with local law enforcement, concerned citizens, and private equine owners. MVHR is a member of the United Horse Coalition, has a TRH Partnership, and is a member of Homes for Horses Coalition, which promotes the welfare and protection of horses and other equines. MVHR holds a Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency on GuideStar and has GFAS Accreditation.
Helping Hands Workshops are led and taught by Program Coordinator Marissa Martindale, who brings a lifetime of horse experience and a passion to share her knowledge with others. Marissa Martindale serves as the Program Coordinator for MVHR Community Horse Programs.
