About
MAKE STUDIO offers classes, workshops, and camps where children make art in a working art studio. The studio includes easily accessible materials, comfortable workstations, and a variety of art tools, with student work on display.
• Ages: 3–17 years old
Make Studio began in 2010 in downtown’s historic Squire Building as a co-operative art space for emerging artists, and the first “Make Studio” Summer Art Camps were held in 2014. The program’s mission states that everyone has a creative capacity to explore and nurture, and that its goal is to enable confident, open-minded individuals by giving them tools to communicate visually. The program follows a choice-based approach to art education that regards students as artists and offers them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through making art. Children learn traditional processes and techniques during demonstrations and are encouraged to experience the work of the artist through authentic learning opportunities and responsive teaching.
Owner and Director Christie Stepan holds a BA in Studio Art from Colorado College, an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and is a Colorado certified K–12 Visual Art teacher who served on the Colorado Department of Education Visual Art Standards review committee. Teacher Sierra McKee received a BS in Art Education from the University of Vermont. The program states that it is dedicated to promoting arts and culture in the Yampa Valley by providing positive art-making experiences for youth.
