About
Pilobolus Educational Programs includes movement workshops, classes, tours, performances, and play. The program uses Pilobolus’s methods to teach dancers, non-dancers, and organizations how to harness the creative potential of groups.
Pilobolus began at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, circa 1971, and has created and toured over 120 pieces of repertory to more than 65 countries. Pilobolus is described as a rebellious dance company that has tested the limits of human physicality since 1971 to explore the beauty and power of connected bodies, and it maps the multiverse of human emotion and existence in its Other Worlds Collection. Pilobolus is now under the Artistic Direction of Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent.
The mission of Pilobolus is to create, perform, and preserve dances using its collaborative creative methods; to expand and diversify audiences through live performance, film, and digital media characterized by qualities of its namesake fungus; and to teach dancers, non-dancers, and organizations how to use Pilobolus’s methods. Pilobolus collaborates with diverse communities, brands, and organizations to show how to maximize group creativity, solve problems, create surprise, and generate joy through nonverbal communication. Pilobolus connects with older adults through Connecting with Balance Zoom classes that focus on mobility and stability with modifications for every ability level.
Pilobolus Day is an annual celebration in Washington, CT, described as being for families, couples, kids, and older adults, and is filled with play, performance, and movement workshops for the Litchfield County community. Pilobolus Day 2026 continues this annual celebration format.
Pilobolus has been recognized with many honors, including a TED Fellowship, a 2012 Grammy Award nomination, a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Programming, several Cannes Lion Awards at the International Festival of Creativity, and recognition as one of Dance Heritage Coalition’s “Irreplaceable Dance Treasures” in 2015.
