About
Horton’s Kids Tutoring and Youth Programs offers one-on-one tutoring, literacy intervention, homework help, and educational advocacy. The program also provides food, clothing, personal hygiene products, and other items that children need to grow and be healthy. Its approach includes four strands of service: academics, youth development, health and wellness, and family engagement.
The mission of Horton’s Kids Tutoring and Youth Programs is “Empowering DC's youth to graduate and succeed in life. Supporting children in Southeast DC is at the heart of our mission.” Children in Horton’s Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school, and the graduation rate for Horton’s Kids participants is twice the neighborhood average. Horton’s Kids empowers more than 600 youth to improve their academic outcomes, develop important character traits, and access healthy meals.
The leadership and support team includes Bria Wimbish (Manager of Programs and School Advocacy – Middle School), Cassi Zeledon (Community & Family Programs Manager), Alphonzo Jackson (Community & Family Programs Manager), Danielle Bennett (Manager of Programs and School Advocacy), Nia Malik (Development Coordinator), Corinne Cannon (Chief Development Officer), Yolanda Pinkney (Community and Family Program Coordinator), and Aubrey Boyd (Volunteer and Partnerships Coordinator). Staff credentials include degrees in fields such as Secondary Education English, Curriculum and Instruction – Accomplished Teaching, Mass Communication with a focus in Public Relations and Sociology, Social Work, Middle-Level Education specializing in Language Arts and Social Studies, public policy, Human Resource Management, and degrees from Trinity Washington University and the London School of Economics.
Horton’s Kids partners closely with parents to promote their children’s progress and provide families with essential resources that reduce stress and promote stability. Volunteers help Horton’s Kids deliver academic, social-emotional development, and basic needs supports to children in Ward 8, and over the years the organization has welcomed hundreds of volunteers, including Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN anchor Jake Tapper, and former Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.
