DC Soccer Club was founded in 1977 as DC Stoddert Soccer and changed its name in 2021 to DC Soccer Club. The organization changed its name to better reflect who they are and to move forward without the name of Benjamin Stoddert, whose history as a slaveowner conflicted with their stated commitment to inclusion, respect, and community. The club began as a grassroots effort to give local children a chance to play soccer and now serves more than 6,500 players U4–U19 and roughly 7,500 participants of all ages and skill levels. DC Soccer Club states that its mission is to develop character and strengthen community by providing accessible, high-quality soccer experiences for youth of all backgrounds and abilities, and its core values are Intention, Inclusion, Collaboration, and Community.

DC Soccer Club’s coaching staff includes professional, licensed coaches, many of whom are current college and high school coaches, and current and former college and professional players. The club is a registered non-profit and a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, is the biggest youth soccer club in Washington, DC, and is the city’s largest independent youth sports program and largest youth sports program for girls. DC Soccer Club is the city’s leader in girls’ participation. The club reports that it provides between $250,000–$300,000 per year in financial assistance to players who need it most and that each season it commits significant resources to financial assistance, coach and referee education, and sustainable programming. The organization also reports that it invests significant resources in financial assistance, education and development, and community initiatives that extend its impact beyond the field, and it has announced a partnership with Cohen Health and Performance. The District Cup is the club’s 5th annual tournament and is described by the club as a great opportunity for teams to compete in a competitive travel tournament at the end of their fall season to showcase their growth and development.
