Kids Elite Sports was founded in summer 2014, after Desmond Dunham “Coach D” developed the idea in 2013 and officially launched Kids Elite that summer. By 2019, Kids Elite offered eight weeks of summer camp and expanded to a second location, and in 2020 the program partnered with Under Armour and offered free virtual sessions instead of in-person camps. In 2023, Kids Elite ran camp throughout the summer at its Murch and Jackson-Reed sites after hosting camp virtually during the pandemic.
Kids Elite states that its aim is to empower children to live healthy and active lifestyles through high-quality developmental sports, fitness, and enrichment programs, and that it provides an excellent foundation for child development through individual and team sports. The camp separates groups by grade level and skill level, considering physical strength and ability, and for younger campers aims to maintain a counselor-to-camper ratio of approximately 1:5. Kids Elite staff is described as handpicked, screened, and certified, with counselors undergoing rigorous training to exemplify the program’s core goals and beliefs.
The program highlights core values of Effort, Leadership, Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence (ELITE), and selects a “Camper of the Day” from each group at the closing huddle based on the day’s core value. Kids Elite is the only camp in the DMV that offers Interactive Football for campers ages 8 and up. In partnership with Under Armour, Kids Elite also offers UA Premier Training programs for dedicated and experienced youth athletes ages 8–18 who want to develop skills and excel in their primary sports.
Families are asked to send campers with their own lunch, a water bottle, extra face masks, and any needed sunscreen or medical supplies for allergic reactions, with all belongings clearly labeled with the child’s full name. Testimonials from parents describe daily drop-in options being helpful, counselors as patient and thoughtful, and children enjoying the variety of sports, tournaments, weekly notes home, and the mix of physical activity and social focus. Several parents report their children returning summer after summer, including non-sporty children who tried a variety of sports, and note that their children come home tired and eager to return.
