About
Center for Children and Families Programs offers early childhood services, individual and group programs for parents, and group and home-based therapy for children. The program also offers summer camps and video teleconferencing therapy as part of its services.
The program’s mission is to improve the lives of children and families struggling with mental health concerns by advancing evidence-based knowledge about mental health and learning problems in youth, promoting the development of effective treatment services for children and families in South Florida, and disseminating knowledge to students, consumers, and professionals in mental health, education, and primary care. Under William E. Pelham, Jr.'s leadership from 2010–2023, the Center for Children and Families evolved into a world class clinical research center. The leadership team includes Dr. Jeremy W. Pettit as Executive Director, Dr. Katie Hart as Director, William E. Pelham, Jr. as Founding Director, and Dr. Gregory Fabiano as leader of the Center for Children and Families of Western New York (WNY) – FIU satellite office team.
Dr. Jeremy W. Pettit is a licensed psychologist and researcher, and Dr. Katie Hart is a licensed psychologist, researcher, and professor. The program includes expert psychiatric consultations for children and teens with Dr. Carlos A. Salgado, which include comprehensive evaluations, personalized treatment plans, and medication management, and there is no waitlist for these psychiatric consultations. The Center delivers state-of-the-art clinical services to more than 3,000 families each year and offers a comprehensive range of individual and group services both in person and through telehealth, including nationally acclaimed summer camps. It is considered one of the largest clinical research centers in the state conducting research on child mental health, and its Western New York satellite office studies effective approaches to help individuals with ADHD across the life span.
In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and The Children’s Trust, the Center for Children and Families has trained thousands of local teachers. FIU has been recognized as a national community engaged leader by the Carnegie Foundation.
