About
Kind Academy uses a Modern Montessori philosophy where students learn by doing and spend time on core subjects along with financial literacy, STEM, and social-emotional learning (SEL) skills. The program emphasizes small class sizes and includes weekly, and sometimes daily, experiences outdoors as part of its approach. It is part of a vibrant network of microschools across the nation that focuses on progressive, student-centered learning and individualized programs that meet students where they are.
Kind Academy was founded in 2016 by Iman Alleyne. It is described as a network of innovative learning programs that support unique, gifted, and neurodiverse learners, with personalized learning that can accelerate when possible and fill gaps when needed, always focusing on each learner's strengths. The mission states that the school community works together to nurture the potential of each child, celebrate each child’s individuality, and offer every child the opportunity to lead as well as learn, and to teach as well as explore.
The program is inclusive of families of all races, religions, genders, and abilities and states that it does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, disability, or national or ethnic origin. It emphasizes education centered on kindness, respect, and the joy of discovery, with a belief in holistic development that includes emotional, social, physical, and intellectual growth. The program uses Conscious Discipline and positive reinforcement, prioritizes the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of students, and emphasizes community, collaboration, celebration of diversity, and promotion of inclusivity. Its stated vision is to create a global community of learners equipped with critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills.
Kind Academy describes learning as a collaborative process that thrives on partnerships between students, educators, families, and the broader community. It is also described as a community of educators and families who work together to create an enriching learning environment.
One parent shared that their twin daughters were more engaged and excited to learn, and that they often sang about Kind Academy and enjoyed the program. Another parent described their child’s Kind Online class as educational, interesting, and fun, and noted that the teacher prepared materials in advance, assigned homework in several ways, and was kind, patient, and encouraging. A third parent described Kind Academy as making a transition from another state seamless and fun for their children, and highlighted the small class sizes and frequent outdoor experiences.
