About

UF/IFAS Extension 4-H Youth Development includes hands-on project areas such as foods and nutrition, sewing, hiking, citizenship, community service, photography, and work with large and small animals, lap animals, and horses. The program also includes activities in child care and babysitting, natural resources and environmental education, recycling, and gardening and ornamental horticulture.

The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is a federal, state, and county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences and to making that knowledge accessible to sustain and enhance the quality of human life. In 4-H, young people have the opportunity to “experience” through “hands-on” learning and discovery in project areas. Older 4-H members develop leadership skills by assisting and instructing younger 4-H members. Extension is a partnership between state, federal, and county governments to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public. UF/IFAS Extension has offices in all 67 Florida counties. In the late 1800s the idea of 4-H was born when one-acre corn contests were organized for boys in various parts of the nation, and the first 4-H program that was affiliated with a university as it is known today began in Holmes County, Mississippi in 1907.
