About
UF/IFAS Extension 4-H Youth Development includes hands-on project areas such as foods and nutrition, sewing, hiking, citizenship, and community service. The program also offers activities in photography; work with large and small animals, lap animals, and horses; and projects in communications and expressive arts, performing arts, and visual arts. Additional project areas include child care and babysitting, natural resources and environmental education, recycling, and gardening and ornamental horticulture. Older 4-H members assist and instruct younger 4-H members in these activities.
The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is a federal, state, and county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences and to making that knowledge accessible to sustain and enhance the quality of human life. Extension is a partnership between state, federal, and county governments to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public. In the late 1800s the idea of 4-H was born when one-acre corn contests were organized for boys in various parts of the nation, and the first 4-H program that was affiliated with a university as it is known today began in Holmes County, Mississippi in 1907. UF/IFAS Extension has offices in all 67 Florida counties.
