Dolphins Plus Bayside, 101900 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo, FL 33037
About
Dolphins Plus Summer Camp introduces campers to marine life through hands-on science activities. Campers explore topics that include local Florida Keys ecosystems, how dolphins communicate, and what dolphin behavior means.
Dolphins Plus Summer Camp takes place at Dolphins Plus Bayside, which is part of a family-owned organization founded in 1979. Dolphins Plus is described as a world-renowned center for marine mammal care, education, and research, and it has developed a Welfare Assessment Program to benchmark and advance best practices in dolphin care and well-being. The organization states that its mission is to treat dolphins as ambassadors for their wild counterparts and voices for the oceans, using hands-on encounters, educational programs, and research to deepen public understanding of marine ecosystems and conservation. Dolphins Plus pioneered responsible dolphin interactions and hosted the first Dolphin Camp for autistic children in 1987. Its team has collaborations with 43 co-authors and 23 national and international universities, with 29 peer-reviewed publications and 44 scientific conference presentations. Dolphins Plus Bayside holds AMMPA accreditation and IMATA accreditation with certified Animal Trainer Development Programs, and it has received several research and presentation awards from IMATA, the Comparative Cognition Society Conference, and the Oceans 180 Research Video Contest. The broader Dolphins Plus community involvement includes a 30+ year tradition of welcoming Make-A-Wish recipients and a long history of marine mammal rescue and response efforts through organizations that evolved into Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder and later Dolphin Life.
