About
Dolphins Plus Summer Camp introduces campers to marine science through hands-on science activities. Campers explore a variety of topics, including local Florida Keys ecosystems, how dolphins communicate, and what dolphin behavior means. The dolphin habitat used by the program is a wild and natural lagoon environment that is part of the ocean, surrounded by lush mangroves, with water temperature and clarity that change with the seasons.
Dolphins Plus Summer Camp is part of Dolphins Plus, whose mission is to promote conservation and create active young stewards of the oceans, and which reaches out to the community on a regular basis. Dolphins Plus brings thousands of students into the world of marine science each year through summer camps, pro bono and outreach activities, custom graduate and undergraduate programs, and partnerships with education groups internationally. The Dolphins Plus library contains research articles and scientific journals about marine mammals, ocean ecology, and environmental conservation. Dolphins Plus adheres to standards set by state and federal guidelines in the keeping and care of its animals, and the dolphin lagoon and pools are monitored with regularly tested water to track circulation and cleanliness. The organization has a full-time veterinary team on site that monitors the health of each animal, and every staff member is trained in emergency procedures, maintaining a safe and healthy aquatic environment, and identifying animals that might be feeling stress or discomfort. Every new staff member completes a 3–6 month preceptorship directly under the Training Director, gains hands-on experience with the dolphins, and must demonstrate a high level of proficiency and pass an extensive written exam before becoming a Trainer. The training program at Dolphins Plus is based on the science of behavior modification and uses current behavior modification techniques and learning principles, and Dolphins Plus participates in sharing information with groups such as the International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association (IMATA).
