About

AAU Gymnastics Programs are part of the Amateur Athletic Union’s multi-sport offerings and operate under the AAU motto and philosophy, “Sports For All, Forever.” These programs are included within an organization that is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs and that conducts more than 60 national events annually at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

• Schedule: Multi-sport AAU membership cards allow youth athletes to compete in 41 sports at the local, regional and national level with one membership.

The AAU was founded in 1888 and is described as one of the largest non-profit, volunteer, multi-sport event organizations in the world. The AAU has nearly 800,000 participants and members and over 150,000 volunteers across 50+ sports programs and 55 U.S. districts. Programs offered by the AAU include AAU Sports Programs (45 sports), the AAU Junior Olympic Games, AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships, the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, and the AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award. The AAU James E. Sullivan Award has been given to America’s top athlete at the collegiate, Olympic or similar elite level since 1930, and the AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2017 to recognize athletes who have paved the way for change in amateur sports. The AAU is a member of the International School Sport Federation, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and its Junior National Volleyball Championships are described as the largest volleyball event in the world, while the AAU Junior Olympic Games are described as the largest multi-sport event in the country and host the largest track and field meet in the country.

AAU President Jo Mirza leads the organization. The AAU mission statement is to offer amateur sports programs through a volunteer base for all people to have the physical, mental, and moral development of amateur athletes and to promote good sportsmanship and good citizenship. Multi-sport AAU membership cards are available with multi-year options for 1, 2 or 3 years, and general liability and participant accident insurance is included as a benefit of membership, with an Extended Coverage benefit that extends insurance coverage to athletes and teams participating in non-AAU events. AAU has a comprehensive Athlete Protection Handbook, a Concussion Policy, and requires mandatory background screening of all non-athletes (coaches). Free coaches’ education for all AAU non-athletes (coaches) is provided through a program administered by the Positive Coaching Alliance via their Double-Goal Coach online courses. Ready Nutrition is the Official Sports Drink of the AAU.

Through its AAU Cares program, created in 2016, the AAU gives back to the communities in which it hosts events. Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief efforts through AAU Cares included 170,000 meals to children everywhere, 10,000 non-perishable food items, 3,000 clothing items, and 5,000 bottles of water. The AAU Urban Initiative, created in 2015, provides a holistic approach to athletics and provides participation opportunities to urban environments that were historically under served.
