The AAU was founded in 1888. Its stated philosophy is “Sports for All, Forever,” which is shared by nearly 800,000 participants and over 150,000 volunteers, and its motto is “Sports For All, Forever” with a focus on offering quality participation opportunities throughout the United States via a network of qualified and experienced event operators.

The AAU Cares program, created in 2016, focuses on giving back to communities where events are hosted and has reported Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief efforts that included 170,000 meals to children, 10,000 non-perishable food items, 3,000 clothing items, and 5,000 bottles of water. The AAU Urban Initiative, created in 2015, uses a holistic approach to athletics and provides participation opportunities in urban environments that were historically underserved.

The AAU Junior Olympic Games are described as the largest multi-sport youth event in the country, and the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships are described as the largest volleyball event in the world, with more than 2,700 teams participating annually. The AAU is a member of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The AAU also presents the AAU James E. Sullivan Award to America’s top athlete at the collegiate, Olympic, or similar elite level (awarded since 1930), and the AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2017, to recognize athletes who have paved the way for change in amateur sports.

AAU membership includes a comprehensive Athlete Protection Handbook, a Concussion Policy, and mandatory background screening for all non-athletes (coaches). All AAU non-athletes (coaches) receive free coaches’ education through Positive Coaching Alliance Double-Goal Coach online courses.
