About

Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County After-School Programs include homework help, tutoring, music and arts enrichment, physical activities and sports, and meals and healthy snacks. This site is a Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County trace their history to 1939, when construction began on what they describe as a bridge to the future for thousands of children from Polk County. The mission of the organization is to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible people. The leadership team includes James J. Musso, Sr. The Club states that its impact extends to the families and communities of the children it serves by increasing graduation rates, lowering teen pregnancy and crime rates, and increasing volunteerism. The Clubs describe themselves as providing a proactive alternative to school failure and the cycle of poverty that affects many of the families whose children they serve, and they offer academic, nutritional, and civic programs that serve children at every stage of development. The after-school programs and nutritional dinners are described as enabling parents to work, knowing their children are in a safe and nurturing environment.
