Lighthouse Learning Summer Camp is part of Lighthouse Learning Microschool and Homeschool Hybrid, led by founders Makenzie Oliver and Jamel Oliver. Makenzie Oliver holds a Master’s in K–12 Education and Administration Leadership, has years of classroom and leadership experience, and has been recognized as Heartland’s Best Teacher in Missouri and Teacher of the Year in Florida, as well as an A+ Teacher by Spectrum News 13. Lighthouse Learning is now in its seventh year, began in 2020 in the founders’ living room with a handful of students, and now serves over 80 students with a waitlist. The program accepts STEP UP Scholarships for PEP and UA Scholarships and offers a reimbursement option for private tutoring through STEP UP, along with its BRIGHT Pathways Scholarship initiative.
The camp follows a microschool and homeschool hybrid model with small class sizes, personalized learning paths, and a Mastery-Based Education and Walk-To-Learn model. It offers guided learning models for grades K–5, an advisory-style READY Program for grades 6–8, and flexible learning paths such as a K–5 Mon–Wed Academic Track, enhanced literacy and guided math models, project-based social studies through history and geography, and a middle school Mon–Wed Academic Track with departmentalized and purposeful learning. Families can choose an Academic Track, Enrichment Track, or a combined Academic and Enrichment program, including a full five-day immersive learning experience or flexible options like the 2-Day STREAM Enrichment Program on Thursday and Friday.
The mission of Lighthouse Learning Microschool and Homeschool Hybrid is to provide a faith-infused, family-centered, and future-focused education that empowers children to thrive, with a flexible, student-centered education that blends structured academics and enrichment activities. The programs are designed to support a variety of learning needs while fostering independence, creativity, and real-world skill development, based on the belief that many families are seeking a nurturing, individualized environment for their children. The vision is rooted in the belief that children learn best when they feel safe, are seen for who they are, are challenged at the right level, and are given purpose in their learning.
Lighthouse Learning has community involvement that includes accepting STEP UP Scholarships for PEP and UA Scholarships, and founder Makenzie Oliver has been an Opening Keynote Speaker and Featured Panelist at VELA Con 2025, VELA’s second annual national conference for bold founders. She is a Featured VELA Founder and has been interviewed on Spectrum News 13 and LiberatED. Testimonials describe the program as having “brought the light back into my child’s life” and as “this little miracle” for a family that had tried several schools, and Spectrum News 13 highlighted that “Eager to teach her own children, Seminole teacher started a micro-school.”
For daily logistics, the camp requires athletic clothes and sneakers with socks each day, and a change of clothes and shoes is highly recommended. Sunscreen and insect repellent should be applied each morning before arriving. Families are asked to pack healthy morning and afternoon peanut-free snacks and a hearty lunch, and students must bring a labeled refillable water bottle each day to stay hydrated.
