About
Brevard Zoo Education Programs include daily presentations, summer camps, field trips, an onsite “Zoo School,” and the Lagoon Quest program. These programs feature hands-on exploration and learning with animals that live in natural habitats, where they can roam, interact with enrichment, and get up close to visitors.

The mission of Brevard Zoo Education Programs is “We Share Our Joy of Nature to Help Wildlife and People Thrive.” The education department impacts tens of thousands of children each year through its programs. As part of the Lagoon Quest program, every fourth grader in Brevard Public Schools is brought to the Lagoon for two full days of hands-on exploration and learning.
Brevard Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has accreditation and membership with industry-leading organizations, often receiving grant support from these institutions. The Zoo is described as a small zoo that does big things and serves as a conservation hub with 700 animals representing 170 species from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia, including lions, jaguars, giraffes, rhinos, okapi, zebras, monkeys, otters, kangaroos, bears, and alligators. The conservation department works with wildlife agencies and the community on projects such as the Restore Our Shores program, conservation breeding programs for critically endangered Florida grasshopper sparrows and native beach mice, and behind-the-scenes rehabilitation centers that care for and release sea turtles, Florida black bear cubs, and manatees.
The East Coast Zoological Foundation was formed to build a community zoo, and Brevard Zoo officially opened its gates to the public in March 1994. Since its inception, more than 16,000 people, including business owners, engineers, tradespeople, and retirees, contributed their time and talents to build the Zoo. In 2023, Brevard Zoo had an estimated total economic impact of $97.2 million in area sales, generating a local labor income of $33.9 million and supporting 1,005 jobs. A future sister campus, Bowen Aquarium, is planned to be built on the banks of the Indian River Lagoon in Port Canaveral, Florida.
