About

Brevard Zoo Education Programs and Camps include daily presentations, summer camps, field trips, an onsite “Zoo School,” and the Lagoon Quest program. The program also offers specialized experiences such as Adult Night Hike, Photography Workshop, and Zoo Careers.

The mission of Brevard Zoo Education Programs and Camps is “We Share Our Joy of Nature to Help Wildlife and People Thrive.” The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has accreditation and membership with industry-leading organizations, often receiving grant support from these institutions. It has been recognized in top zoo lists and awards from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The East Coast Zoological Foundation was formed prior to the Zoo’s opening, and in March 1994 the Zoo opened its gates to the public; a quarter-century later, the organization notes it has held steadfast to its mission. More than 500,000 people visit the Zoo annually, with 44% coming from outside the county, and in 2023 it had an estimated total economic impact of $97.2 million in area sales, generating a local labor income of $33.9 million and supporting 1,005 jobs.

The Zoo has an ongoing partnership with Brevard Public Schools and other educational providers. As part of the Lagoon Quest program, every fourth grader in Brevard Public Schools is brought to the Lagoon for two full days of hands-on exploration and learning. The Zoo reports an incredibly high level of community support since its inception, including more than 16,000 volunteers helping construct the Zoo, a $2.5 million loan from the Tourism Development Council through the county commissioners, and a 303-member Founder’s Society that helped match a $500,000 state grant, along with additional funds raised through T-shirt sales and thousands of memberships. The Zoo is also involved in efforts to restore native oysters and mangroves in the Indian River Lagoon.
