Founded in 2003, OYC Miami is a 501(c)(3) community development organization that offers comprehensive programs and services for youth, adults, and families. Its mission is to inspire, empower, and enrich the lives of youth, adults, and families through a comprehensive and long-term approach to strengthening communities. The organization operates as a year-round servicing agency with holistic programming that focuses on erasing generational cycles by providing resources for children, families, and adults. OYC Miami’s work is organized around five key pillars of impact: Education, Enrichment and Exposure, Health, Family, and Economic Sustainability Initiatives.
Under the Health and Wellness pillar, programs emphasize proper nutrition for youth. Under the Enrichment and Exposure pillar, activities include summer camp offerings such as Broward Summer Camp and elementary campers’ field trips, as well as experiences like a FIFA live event and TEDx Overtown Youth. Economic Sustainability initiatives include workforce development programs like United in Finance, which adults complete over eight weeks. Young Coders Initiative volunteers lead weekly coding classes for middle school students.
OYC Miami partners with community members such as Ronnie from La Casita Tropical Restaurant for in-kind meal donations for Broward Summer Camp students. The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation and Icy Hot created Comebaq Courts in 2021 to refurbish basketball courts for youth programs in underserved areas, including an indoor basketball court at the Overtown Youth Center in Miami. OYC Miami is led by CEO Tina Brown and was founded by NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies.
Tina Brown describes OYC as having a deep commitment and passion to service and to breaking generational cycles through support and resources. Alonzo Mourning has stated that he feels responsible to use his blessings to “bless other people” and that he wants children in Miami to know he cares about them. Shaquille O’Neal has publicly credited Alonzo Mourning with saving his professional life and has said that if there were no Alonzo, there would be no him, and that he owes him everything. He has also said that Alonzo “deeply cares” and encouraged kids in Miami to know that both he and Alonzo care about them.
