The mission of Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge is education, conservation, and rehabilitation for the welfare of Northwest Florida's natural fauna, with a stated purpose to rescue, rehabilitate, and when possible release back to the wild sick, orphaned, and injured wildlife, and to educate the community on local wildlife and human responsibilities to support that wildlife. In 2019, the organization built its Navarre campus, which connects the education and medical centers with a brick pathway. The refuge provides medical care and rehabilitation to almost 2,000 injured or orphaned native Florida species each year and has a marine mammal and sea turtle stranding team on call 365 days a year. It responds to stranded dolphins, whales, and sea turtles and to beached or stranded marine wildlife species along Emerald Coast beaches in Santa Rosa, Escambia, Okaloosa, and Walton counties, and responds to stranded, injured, entangled, or deceased marine mammals from the Alabama state line into Walton County and sea turtles in Okaloosa County. The organization teaches the local Gulf Coast community, tourists, school groups, and others about the ecology of the Emerald Coast and the importance of coexisting with wildlife, and engages community members, businesses, tourists, and other organizations as donors, volunteers, and sponsors. The newsletter “The Pelican Post” is delivered monthly with updates and activities.
