About

theCoderSchool is an after-school drop-off and virtual program where kids work on coding, AI (artificial intelligence), Scratch, Python, robotics, and video game coding. The program uses personalized guidance from experienced Code Coaches and keeps a super-small student-to-teacher ratio, typically 2:1. Students also learn how AI works, how to use it responsibly, and how to think critically about technology.

• Schedule: After-school drop-off and virtual program format

Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Silicon Valley since 2014, theCoderSchool describes itself as the largest coding school in Silicon Valley with more locations around the country and offers franchising opportunities. The leadership story highlights Hansel, who created the idea behind theCoderSchool and the Code Coaches mentoring philosophy, Wayne, who was brought on to focus on corporate schools and franchise support, and Maile, Hansel’s oldest child, who was 10 years old at the time of the story. The mission statement emphasizes a belief that every child is unique, a focus on creativity, problem solving, and confidence, and the phrases “Learn to code. Change the world®” and “Learn to Code, Change the World®.”

The program runs an internal National Top App of the Month recognition program, where each month they vote on the best app out of hundreds submitted nationwide by students; one listed winner is Leo (9) from West County, MO, for a Scratch app called “Math Quiz” in May 2026. theCoderSchool is a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge (CAC) and is collaborating with CAC beginning in 2025–2026 to run a national recognition program to identify a handful of top applications from thousands of CAC submissions across the country, under the banner “CAC Top Apps presented by theCoderSchool.”

Parent testimonials describe customized curriculum and STEM concepts via coding, positive experiences with online classes, and kids enjoying Scratch camp and creating games. These testimonials come from parents in New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Connecticut.
