About

Youth Empowerment Programs (Afterschool Academic Program & Teen Empowerment) offers academic support, mentorship, and enrichment for students in grades K–12. The program helps students with homework, school projects, and reading skills, including a structured daily reading curriculum and academic assistance using Chromebooks for MySCS online assignments. Staff and volunteers also provide one-on-one assistance to students with Specialized Varying Exceptionality (SVES) and Individualized Education Program (IEP) needs, and coach life skills to teens and adults.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday through Friday, 2:30–5:30 p.m.
• Price: Donation amounts are limited to $500 per month per agency, per household, with a maximum of $3,000 per year per agency.

The program is guided by certified teachers, staff, and dedicated volunteers, including certified teachers from Laurel Nokomis Elementary and Middle School, Venice Middle School, and Venice Elementary School who provide part-time academic instruction. Three 86" Promethean Smart Boards extend classroom instruction into the program space, and every student is provided with a Chromebook. During the 2024–2025 school year, the program had a daily average attendance of 121 students, with 94% of general education students earning or maintaining A–B honor roll status, 84% of IEP students performing above average academically, and 95% of students finishing the year reading above average, up from 89% at the beginning of the year. The goal for the current school year is for at least 90% of students to finish above average academically.

Youth Empowerment Programs (Afterschool Academic Program & Teen Empowerment) serves students from all Sarasota County schools, with primary participation and transportation from Laurel Nokomis Elementary and Middle School, Venice Elementary School, and Venice Middle School, in partnership with Sarasota County Schools. The 2026 Summer Teen Empowerment Program (STEP) is a proactive prevention program designed to reach and engage teens, and teen empowerment activities include character development and life skills coaching. The organization states that, with its partners, it builds strong foundations through programs that empower children and families to lead successful lives, and that it believes children can overcome challenges at home, in school, and in life if shown the way, need to succeed academically to become independent and self-sufficient adults, and benefit when teens are provided with life skills to set a course for future success. Client Choice Food Distributions are held in partnership with All Faiths Food Bank and Midwest Food Bank, and contributions can be made via the Flanzer Philanthropic Trust Matching Program by selecting Laurel Civic Association.
