About
BrightStar Learning Center offers an academic program where children manipulate materials, choose activities, solve problems, and use both small and large muscles during the school day. Scholars take part in a variety of developmentally appropriate educational activities that use programs such as the Wonders Early Learning Literacy Program, the STEAM Program, and the Leader in Me Program. Using a combination of these programs, scholars engage in rich, cross-curricular learning experiences that reflect the belief that learning for children ages 3–4 often takes place through play and that making connections between diverse skills and concepts is described as the way children learn best.
• Ages: 3–4 years old
The academic program at BrightStar Learning Center is described as designed to develop the whole child and takes a holistic approach to education rather than focusing on academic measures alone. The program is described as rigorous and STEM-focused for students in Pre-K 3 and 4, with an environment rooted in high academic expectations, strong character development, and meaningful opportunities for advanced learning. STEAM learning at BrightStar is described as encouraging innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity, and is said to result in a capable, multi-faceted child while building skills to navigate the world around them. The Leader in Me Program is described as providing scholars with a model and process that addresses common challenges unique to students and helps them develop mindsets, behaviors, and skills to be effective lifelong leaders.
BrightStar Learning Center is led by two highly accomplished and experienced educational leaders, Lourdes Isla-Marrero and Mr. Douglas Rodriguez, who together have over 60 years of experience. Lourdes Isla-Marrero is the former Assistant Principal of Mater East Elementary, the founding Principal of Mater Gardens Academy, and serves on multiple boards for Academica Schools, including Somerset Academy. Mater East Elementary is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, and Mater Gardens Academy was honored as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2014 for its outstanding academic performance. Mr. Douglas Rodriguez is described as a distinguished and visionary leader, renowned for his dedication to academic excellence and his ability to inspire both students and staff, and he has served as Principal at multiple schools across Miami-Dade County, including Mater Brickell Middle High School and Doral Academy Charter School, and has held the role of President at Doral College. During his time as a school administrator, Mr. Rodriguez received three National Blue Ribbon Awards and was named Miami-Dade County and Florida Principal of the Year in 2008. Together, these two leaders are described as committed to providing a rigorous, STEM-focused education at BrightStar Pre-K/Mater Pre-K Learning Center for students in Pre-K 3 and 4, aiming to create an environment of high expectations, opportunities for advanced education, and character and value-based education.
