MOCA North Miami began as the Center for Contemporary Art in 1981 and transformed into a 23,000-square-foot facility by 1996, and it was renamed the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA North Miami) in 1997. MOCA North Miami states that it is a vibrant and inclusive space for contemporary art that is rooted in and inspired by diverse communities, and that through exhibitions, education and public programming, and its permanent collection, it cultivates a lifelong love of the arts. MOCA North Miami is funded by the North Miami Mayor and Council and the City of North Miami; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; with lead support from Mellon Foundation, major support from Shirley and William M. Lehman, Jr., and additional support from the Fine & Greenwald Foundation and the Sol Taplin Charitable Foundation. MOCA states that it will deepen its role as a cultural hub for North Miami and the broader region through after-school classes, summer camp, and local partnerships, and that it will make creativity an essential and accessible part of civic life.
