About

Champions offers activities in STEM, art, and group games. The program operates in schools and uses safe, secure outdoor play spaces at the school or program location for outdoor play. All sites include smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

Teachers and staff undergo extensive training on health and safety practices, including pandemic-response protocols. They are trained in first aid and CPR, and in child development, early childhood education, or a related field. Criminal background checks are conducted for staff. Champions states that it is a safe, healthy place for children, and that the safety, security, and health of each child is a top priority. The program follows local health department guidelines and the guidance of the schools where it operates.

Each site has a wellness screening located near the Family Communication Area where families assess their child before entering for the day. If a child does not feel well or shows symptoms while in care, families are notified and appropriate measures are taken. Families are informed of instances of contagious diseases affecting children who may have had direct exposure at the program. Emotional wellness is an essential part of the curriculum and approach to education, and daily lessons include community building and character development to foster kindness, empathy, and fairness.

Only authorized staff and families may enter sites. The program will not release a child to any emergency contact younger than 18 years of age unless the individual is the legal parent or guardian. Families are asked to refrain from posting photos or videos that contain images of children other than their own on the Internet. All children must be signed in and out on a paper-based roster and/or computer system, in addition to other individual state licensing regulations. Only pre-approved people with photo identification may pick up a child, and written authorization must be on file before a child is released to anyone.

Sites are cleaned daily with safe, non-toxic cleaning products, and high-touch items and surfaces are sanitized throughout the day. Cleaning supplies are locked safely out of reach of children. Staff and students practice frequent hand washing. Most sites offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks, though meal service may vary from site to site. At sites that provide meal service, menus satisfy all applicable federal and state nutrition guidelines, and a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein, including calcium-rich foods, are offered. Sites may restrict which food items are served and brought in to accommodate those with food allergies.

Staff are regularly trained on safety measures related to field trips or off-site activities. Families must provide permission before a child participates in a field trip or off-site activity. A doctor’s note is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, for any child under the age of 2. A form from the site must be completed to authorize staff to give prescription or non-prescription medications or apply topical non-prescription medications.

Each site has an emergency evacuation plan that is tested frequently. An emergency plan and list of procedures are posted in each classroom. The National Support Center has a crisis team that supports each center during and after emergencies. If a center must temporarily close due to an emergency, the crisis team works with center management to update families and staff on when the center can re-open.
