About
Champions is a program that states that it is a safe, healthy place for children and that the emotional wellness of each child is an essential part of its curriculum and approach to education. The program supports emotional wellness with daily lessons in community building and character development that focus on kindness, empathy, and fairness. Champions states that it strives to create a safe, nurturing environment for children to build confidence, make friends, express ideas, take risks, and be themselves.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
• Schedule: Customer Care Department is available at 1-888-525-2780 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. (PST), Monday through Friday.
Teachers and staff at Champions undergo extensive training on health and safety practices, including pandemic-response protocols, and they are trained in first aid and CPR. Teachers and staff members are trained in child development, early childhood education, or a related field, and criminal background checks are conducted for staff. Only authorized staff and families may enter sites, and all children must be signed in and out on a paper-based roster and/or computer system. Only pre-approved people with photo identification may pick up a child, and written authorization must be on file before a child is released to anyone.
Champions sites include smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, and cleaning supplies are locked safely out of children’s reach. Staff and students practice frequent hand washing. Most sites offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks, with menus that satisfy applicable federal and state nutrition guidelines where meal service is provided, and programs may restrict which food items are served or brought in to accommodate food allergies.
All outdoor play is supervised and conducted only on safe, secure outdoor play spaces available at the school or program location. Staff are regularly trained on safety measures related to field trips or off-site activities, and families must provide permission before a child participates in a field trip or off-site activity. Each site has an emergency evacuation plan that is tested frequently, and an emergency plan and list of procedures are posted in each classroom.
A National Support Center has a crisis team that supports each center during and after emergencies, and if a center must temporarily close due to an emergency, the National Support Center works with center management to update families and staff on reopening. Champions follows local health department guidelines and the guidance of the schools they operate in for COVID-19 response. Families are asked to refrain from posting photos or videos that contain images of children other than their own on the Internet.
For medication, a doctor’s note is required for any prescription or over-the-counter medication for any child under the age of 2. To authorize staff to give prescription or non-prescription medications or apply topical non-prescription medications, a form from the site must be completed.
