Lyric's AWESOME! Summer Camp gives campers three AWESOME weeks exploring drama, dance, music, and technical theater production. Campers can also join Stage Crew to build props, build scenery, and help run the show, and they take part in arts & crafts, game show fun, movie days, and outdoor recreation.
• Schedule: Three-week sessions, with Session 1 from June 8–26 and Session 2 from July 6–24
The program takes place at The Lyric Theatre. The leadership team includes Sue Nauss, Arts & Education Coordinator. Each of the teaching staff at LASC are described as passionately committed not only to arts education but to bolstering the self-confidence and empowerment of each camper. The camp’s motto is “Having good character onstage and off,” and the mission states that the staff use the performing arts as a medium to teach campers about teamwork, self-discipline, problem-solving, tolerance, and kindness, with more interest in developing the camper's character off the stage than on stage. According to the program’s description, LASC has proven to be a powerful platform to get kids on board with socially responsible behavior, and each session supports a theme to promote teamwork, self-discipline, problem-solving, tolerance, and kindness.
The program lists Session 1 as “Why We Tell the Story – Honoring our past for the future” and Session 2 as “Unplugged – Disconnecting to Connect.” The mission statement explains that the camp uses the performing arts as a medium to teach practical life skills applications and character-building techniques that translate to everyday life. The program also invites families or community members to sponsor a camper or become a sponsor for one of its other Arts & Education programs. To register, families are instructed to download registration forms and return them along with a deposit by mail, scan and email, or fax.
