The Town of Surfside Parks & Recreation Department states that it is where Surfside's families learn to swim, brush up on their tennis skills, meet new friends and get to know their neighbors. Entertainment and recreation programs are offered throughout the year, with numerous events and programs for adults, seniors, teens and kids. The department notes that residents should remember to renew their Resident ID annually beginning October 1 of each year.
The town’s parks and recreation amenities include a world-class Community Center and aquatics facility, a pool with lap lanes, a plunge pool and slide, a children’s activity pool, a jacuzzi, and the Surf-n-Sides poolside eatery. Additional features include a Tennis Center, multiple parks, a Community Garden, and the Paws Up Dog Park. Public art connected to these programs includes a mural by Douglas Hoekzema (Hoxxoh) at 96th Street Park, a sculpture by Pablo Atchugarry at the beach end of 94th Street, and the “Turtle Walk” public exhibition of colorful fiberglass turtle sculptures designed by local artists to raise awareness about loggerhead sea turtles.
The Town of Surfside was founded on May 18, 1935. In 1962, the town built the Community Center at 93rd Street, which was later torn down and rebuilt into a recreation facility, and the current Town Hall was renovated in 2001. The department describes its Community Center as a state-of-the-art Community Center and aquatics facility and a world-class recreation facility. Leadership information lists Sandra N. McCready, MMC, as the Public Records Custodian.
Community involvement connected to the town includes a collaboration with the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections in a first-ever municipal election partnership, founding membership in the Clean Energy Coastal Corridor under the Property Accessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program, and membership in the Compact of Mayors. The town has also signed letters opposing the repeal of the federal Clean Power Plan, banned plastic straws and Styrofoam, created incentives to promote the use of solar photovoltaic systems for residents and businesses, installed solar-powered garbage compaction containers, and set requirements for environmentally-preferable building practices. Garbage and trash are collected from all residences five days a week, and emergency police response time is approximately one minute.
