Playcamp at The Sue is the city's oldest fee-based camp and began in 1966 under former Parks Supervisor Sue McCollum, and it offers small camper to counselor ratios and uses a lottery-based registration system where arrival time does not affect chances. Lafayette Arts & Crafts Summer Camp follows a specific theme for each session and includes ephemeral nature art and some food related lessons, and it is currently taking applications for Camp Counselors with art experience and for teen volunteer Counselors in Training (CITs) ages 13–15. Tennis & Swim Camp is intended for beginner or advanced beginner skill levels and is run by the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Tennis Division, with a daily schedule that includes drop off, tennis instruction, snack, time to dress for the pool, swimming, and pickup.
Summer Playground Camp offers both full day and half day (Teen Center only) options, with weekly registration based on availability, and registration can be done online or by calling local Community Centers, with discounts only available through centers. Summer Playground Camp campers must be at least 5 years old and have completed 1 year of kindergarten, and a camper cannot turn 13 before the first day of camp; Teen Campers must be 13 years old by the first day of camp. Campers for Lafayette Arts & Crafts Summer Camp must be ages 6–12 by August 2026 and have completed Kindergarten, and campers for Tennis & Swim Camp are intended to be between the ages 6–14. Playcamp campers bring a lunch and a drink, and a morning snack is provided. To ensure a child’s registration for Summer Playground Camp, payment for each week must be made in full, and spots are not secured until payment is made; if applying for the financial assistance discount, documentation of assistance must be provided to Center Staff when registering.
The Summer Playground Camp program states that it provides a safe and enriching environment for campers to participate in healthy, developmentally-appropriate activities and learning experiences, with a focus on having fun while learning, building self-esteem, and developing social skills through new activities, and it is the intent of PRNA to provide a safe, successful, enjoyable experience for all participants free from physical or emotional harm. PRNA states that it provides accessible recreation facilities and programs and welcomes all citizens regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual preference, gender, gender identity, socioeconomic status, or level of physical or mental ability. The City of Tallahassee is an equal opportunity employer, and the City of Tallahassee Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs is seeking individuals to serve community youth by providing a summer full of fun and a lifetime of memories. Summer Playground Camp staff have a stated minimum training and experience requirement of the ability to follow oral and written instructions and carry out assigned tasks.
