• Schedule: Thrift Store hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10am–4pm
Sumter Youth Center began in 2001 as a joint project of Sumter County community leaders, and on May 21, 2002 it opened the doors to its Wildwood center. The mission of Sumter Youth Center is to provide a place where youth can develop healthy lifestyles and quality relationships that will help produce productive caring adults. The organization is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, community-based organization that serves the social service needs of youth and families on the north and south ends of Sumter County and has grown since 2001 to serve hundreds of youth and families throughout the Sumter County area. Its combined facilities have more than 34,000 square feet of recreation areas, and the program provides quality supervision for youth ages 5–17, with bus service from schools to centers and an emphasis on helping children improve reading skills and complete school homework with volunteer mentors, as well as on being polite, having good manners, following directions, completing assigned tasks, and having respect for others.
One supporter notes that there is a great deal of time devoted to helping children improve their reading skills and complete their school homework with volunteer mentors, along with many fun activities such as bus trips to the Orlando Science Center and Aquatica, gardening, music, choir, and sports. A parent reports that their child enjoys basketball, four square, pool, movies, computer time, snacks, and socializing with friends, and that the child receives help with homework and a snack and drink while attending the center. Another parent describes Sumter Youth Center as a family-oriented place that was a pivotal time in their life and says it shaped them into the person they are today. A testimonial from Andrea Davis-Worthy states that her mind is at ease because she knows that her children are being well cared for and safe at Sumter Youth Center. Peg Casey RN from The Villages states that she highly recommends Sumter Youth Center and feels that the centers provide a safe and nurturing environment, and that the staff genuinely care for the children.
