The Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County trace their history back to 1939, when construction began on what they describe as a bridge to the future for thousands of children from Polk County. The mission of the organization is to enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible people. Several units of the program, including the James J. Musso, Joe L. Saunders, John L. Sanders, South Ridge, Weinstein Family, and Wogan S. Badcock Jr. Units, are designated as Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The organization states that its impact extends to the families and communities of the children it serves by increasing graduation rates, lowering teen pregnancy and crime rates, and increasing volunteerism. It also states that its after-school programs and nutritional dinners enable parents to work, that it provides parents with peace of mind knowing their children are safe and supervised, that it keeps kids safe and out of trouble through pathways to success, and that it is removing barriers to afterschool and summer care for all families.
