About
Acworth Expanding Horizons & Acworth Achievers includes educational field trips, recreational activities, mentoring, tutoring, service projects, and community service. Participants take part in local educational trips and programs, national educational trips, college tours, and hear from guest speakers, along with various FUN activities and a focus on servant-leadership.
• Ages: 9–18 years old
• Schedule: Educational field trips one Saturday per month from August through April, plus mentoring and after school sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30–6:30 p.m.
• Price: Acworth Expanding Horizons is funded entirely from grants and donations and is provided free of charge to participants.
The Expanding Horizons Educational Field Trip Program began in 2006, and in 2022 Acworth Expanding Horizons Foundation Inc. became recognized as a 501c(3) non-profit organization. For Expanding Horizons, faculty and staff from local schools select students in grades 4–12, with a participant number of 75 and transportation provided by Cobb County Schools and the Acworth Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Department bus and van. The Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program serves students in grades 6–12, with an average of 20–30 participants and transportation provided by the Acworth Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Department bus and van.
The mission of the Expanding Horizons Educational Field Trip Program is to provide a positive and nontraditional learning experience through educational field trips. The mission of the Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program is to provide educational assistance, recreational activities, mentorship and foster servant leadership. Expanding Horizons is described as a program that creates unique learning opportunities and mentorship through educational field trips, recreational activities, and servant-leadership for Acworth’s local youth.
The leadership team includes Jordon Gonzalez as Lead Program Coordinator and Program Coordinator, and Trey Tidwell as Program Coordinator and Assistant Program Coordinator. Jordon Gonzalez graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology - Applied Fitness and Active Lifestyle Development and a Master's Degree in Sport Management.
Schools served include Acworth Intermediate, Barber Middle School, Awtrey Middle School, North Cobb High School, and other Acworth area schools. One community member stated that “Expanding Horizons and Acworth Achievers play a very important role in the betterment of our community and the young people it serves. We as a community are grateful that we have organizations like these who are working night and day to better our world and make Acworth a better place to encourage and grow our youth.”
