The Chehaw Park Authority was created by the Georgia Legislature in April 1979 and is considered a public corporation and instrumentality of the State of Georgia. Its vision is based on conservation, education, and preservation. The Chehaw Park Authority board has nine members appointed by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Albany, Dougherty County, and Lee County. The Zoo at Chehaw is home to 234 specimens representing over 73 different species and features natural, outdoor exhibits including Cheetahs, Black Rhinos, Prairie Dogs, Black Bears, Alligators, and more. Chehaw is dedicated to protecting endangered species and their habitats, and states that responsible zoological facilities contribute to conservation through research and education and provide guests the opportunity to develop personal connections with animals. The Upland Wildlife Festival is a full-day outdoor event that connects families with Georgia’s native wildlife, conservation efforts, and hands-on nature experiences.
