Club SciKidz was established in 1997, and beginning in 2001, Camp Young Scientist was created to accommodate children in grades 1–2. Since 1997, more than 100,000 children have attended one or more of Club SciKidz' science day camps or school programs. Owners Bob and Sue Hagan have a combined 30 plus years of teaching experience and both hold a Master’s Degree in Education.
The mission of Club SciKidz is based on the principle that parents want to provide their children with exciting, challenging, and life impacting academic enrichment experiences, and the company states that it is committed to demonstrating how science works in the real world through activities such as veterinary medicine, Mini Medical School, drones, 3D printing, Virtual Reality Pokemon, America Doll, Wizarding World, Lego robotics, forensics, video game creation, food science, paleontology, engineering, chemistry and biology, astronomy, oceanography, emergency medicine, and special effects. Each summer, Club SciKidz Atlanta offers over 70 themed science summer camps for grades PK–8th in the Atlanta Metro area, and its science programs are described as meeting the needs of children ages 4–15. The organization states that carefully researched science lessons engage students in observation, measurement, identification of properties, and experimentation involving life, earth, and physical science concepts, and that each unit is rigorously researched by science educators with the help of teachers and children.
Club SciKidz notes that it is looking for certified teachers, college students, and outstanding high school seniors as staff. The program has received STEM.org recognition and cites “Recognized Excellence in STEM Education” as a credential. Club SciKidz operates multiple summer day camp locations each year in Georgia, conducts in-school programs in the Metro Atlanta area, and also operates franchise locations across the United States.
Parent testimonials describe the program as having “fun and kind, caring staff,” note that children “learned so much and had a blast,” and mention that teenagers and young adults facilitating activities were “GREAT.” Other parents report that their children loved the variety of activities, fun experiments, and interaction with other kids and counselors, and one family stated that out of five different camps their children attended, this was their favorite. Additional comments mention a “safe environment, fun activities, great hours,” describe the camp as “organized and well run,” and highlight that teachers and the director were “incredibly thoughtful and caring.”
