The Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA was founded in 1959 and was formerly known as the Southwest Y. It is one of the earliest Ys in Atlanta and is named in honor of civil rights leaders and Atlanta icons Ambassador Andrew Young and Dr. Walter Young. The branch is described as the newly renovated Andrew & Walter Young Family Y and has amenities that include an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium, wellness center, group exercise, family locker rooms, play center (childcare), teen center, indoor track, afterschool, and school break camp. The Young Family Y has been serving the communities of East Point, College Park, Hapeville, and West End for more than 60 years through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and builds partnerships with local organizations and businesses to enhance programs and services. The leadership team includes Monteil Weeks, Group Vice President and Executive Director, and Robert Wright, Associate Executive Director. Reflecting its Judeo-Christian heritage, the YMCA of Metro Atlanta is an association of volunteers, members, and staff, open to and serving all, with programs and services which build spirit, mind, and body, and financial assistance is available based on need, with an active effort to identify and involve those in need.
