The Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA was founded in 1959 and was formerly known as the Southwest Y, and it has been serving the communities of East Point, College Park, Hapeville, and West End for more than 60 years. The YMCA of Metro Atlanta states that, reflecting its Judeo-Christian heritage, it is an association of volunteers, members, and staff, open to and serving all, with programs and services which build spirit, mind, and body, and that financial assistance is available based on need, with an active effort to identify and involve those in need. The newly renovated Andrew & Walter Young Family Y is named in honor of civil rights leaders and Atlanta icons Ambassador Andrew Young and Dr. Walter Young and is one of the earliest Ys in Atlanta. Amenities at this branch include an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium, wellness center, group exercise, indoor track, family locker rooms, a Play Center for childcare, and a Teen Center. The Young Family Y notes that it relies on partnerships with corporate, government, and community organizations and offers community outreach programs such as hunger relief, safety around water classes, and chronic disease support. The leadership team includes Monteil Weeks, Group Vice President and Executive Director, and Robert Wright, Associate Executive Director.
