• Ages: 12–28 years old

Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness opened its doors in 2002. The program describes its mission as “Helping Families Thrive. Create Lasting, Meaningful Change Together.” It serves families from across the United States, including North Carolina, Georgia, Utah, Tennessee, South Carolina, California, Texas, New York, Florida, Colorado, Illinois, and beyond.

The program reports high staff-to-student ratios of 3:1 or lower and identifies itself as a small, single owner-operated program. The staff includes experienced, licensed therapists, passionate wilderness guides, attentive logistics staff, and enthusiastic and knowledgeable admissions professionals. The leadership team includes Logan Baker, LPC, who serves as a therapist. Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness notes that it is an evidence-based wilderness therapy program with early clinical and psychiatric assessments performed at intake, comprehensive family therapy support, individualized treatment plans, and robust family programming to help families establish shared values, set goals, and build healthy boundaries with a clear plan for moving forward. It describes itself as a leading nature-based therapy program that integrates a family systems approach, whole body health and wellness, and holistic, assessment-driven clinical treatment for teens and young adults with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

In 2023, Blue Ridge earned a six-year accreditation from the Association for Experiential Education (AEE). One former adolescent client stated, “If my parents never made the decision to send me to Blue Ridge Wilderness, I know for a fact that my life would look completely different right now. Blue Ridge saved my life. And to anyone reading this, whether a parent or a teenager struggling, it can save your life or your child’s life too. Blue Ridge will always have a special place in my heart and I will forever remember my time there.” The program states, “We are a community of individuals who believe that wilderness therapy works.” It also states that while it provides structure, emotional support, physical care, and a wilderness setting, the outcomes students experience are the result of their own dedication and commitment, explaining that the program provides tools while individuals and families put in the hours of self-reflection and practice.
