About
The Summer Music Theatre Camp Program is a two-week summer music theatre camp program where participants sing, act, and take part in stage performances. The program includes musicals and musical theatre, along with activities in drama, music, and dance. It is part of a broader range of live performances that also includes plays, comedy, educational performances, and an Entertainment Series with country music, orchestral concerts, bluegrass, and other genres.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Two-week summer music theatre camp sessions
• Price: For the price of a quarter, a kid could see a cartoon, serial, a western, a newsreel, and a main feature and still have money left over for popcorn and a soda.
The Summer Music Theatre Camp Program began in 1990 as a two-week program for the youth of Cartersville and Bartow County and now serves over 100 students per year. It has expanded to include camps for four age groups, each ending with a stage performance. The senior high group has presented musicals such as “Grease,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Bye Bye, Birdie,” “Li’l Abner,” and “Oklahoma.”
The two-week summer music theatre camp program started in 1990 was directed by George and Jonalyn Bew and Don Kordecki. The Grand Theatre’s programming between 1978 and 1983 was kept active by The Pumphouse Players, and it was managed by The Etowah Education Foundation for 11 years after reopening in 1989. Cartersville native William Brown served as manager for The Grand, and The Grand Theatre was originally operated by Manning and Wink Enterprises.
The mission of The Grand Theatre is to foster a life-long appreciation for the performing arts by offering quality educational programs and providing a variety of cultural events. The summer music theatre camp program was started for the youth of Cartersville and Bartow County, and The Grand hosts school groups during the year for educational performances where groups learn about areas of the school curriculum through drama, music, and dance. The Grand Theatre provides a venue to many community groups who rent the theatre for their performances, and The Grand Theatre Opera Company and The Pumphouse Players have produced shows featuring local performers as well as professional singers and actors.
