Decatur Community Players is a children’s musical theatre company founded in 2009 that offers year-round performing arts instruction for children ages 5 to 18, including a musical theatre performance program, after-school care, Saturday classes, a travel team, and summer camps. Transportation options for the Foundations After School Program include walking pick up from Talley Street Upper Elementary School (Talley), van pick up from Fifth Ave Upper Elementary School (FAVE), or parent-arranged car drop off. The organization states that its mission is to include every child who wishes to be involved in a performing arts program, to inspire imagination and cultivate creativity on stage and off, to help children develop communication skills, self-esteem, and teamwork, and to involve children in every aspect of production while encouraging their input whenever possible. The program is described as an award-winning musical theatre performance program, and every January Decatur Community Players participates in the Junior Theater Festival. The leadership team includes Shell Ramirez (Founder/Owner/Director), Melissa Gouinlock (Costume Maeven/Registrar), Kaylee (theatre dog), Jeff Sutton (Technical Director), Freya Gouinlock (Directing Foundations, Travel Team, and Advanced), Bobbi Twiggs (directing after-school), Sydney Fessenden (Marketing Coordinator), Sofia Waters (at after-school three days a week), and Michael Short (Directing Apprentice and Choreographer to the Advanced/Travel groups).
