The mission of Georgia 4-H is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H is a community of young people in kindergarten through 12th grade across America who learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills through hands-on explorative projects. 4-H is the nation’s largest youth leadership development organization, empowering nearly six million young people across the United States, and Georgia has almost 170,000 active 4-H’ers across the state. Putnam County 4-H has more than 700 members, and any youth in 4th–12th grade may join Putnam County 4-H.
Cloverleaf 4-H’ers are members in 4th–6th grade, Junior 4-H’ers are members in 7th and 8th grade, and Senior 4-H’ers are members in 9th–12th grade. Putnam County 4-H hosts fundraisers throughout the year to try to raise money to keep optional program costs as low as possible. All volunteers must be certified, which includes a background check. Putnam County 4-H uses Remind text groups to share information: Cloverleaf members (4th–6th grade) can join by texting @pc4hclover to 81010, and Junior/Senior members (7th–12th grade) can join by texting @pc4hjrsr to 81010.
4-H offers more than 100 project areas for young people to showcase their work and is a “Learn by Doing” organization. The 4-H colors are green and white, and the symbol is a green four-leaf clover with a white H on each leaf representing head, heart, hands, and health. The 4-H motto is “To Make the Best Better,” the slogan is “Learn By Doing,” and the 4-H pledge is: “I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”
