Camp Viola was founded in the 1920s by Miss Viola Burks, whose first encampment was held in 1926. In 1927, she purchased 123 acres of land near Mountville, Georgia, and in 1928 the children’s camp became known as Camp Viola. The mission of Camp Viola is stated as “Connecting Kids to Christ in His Creation,” and it aims to provide a camp for children, at no cost to their families, that would give them the opportunity for outdoor activities and spiritual enrichment, and to continue its mission to provide a week of Christ-centered summer camp for children in Troup County and the surrounding area.

Miss Viola Burks, known as Miss Vi, was Executive Secretary of the LaGrange Welfare Association and obtained funds from the churches of LaGrange to start the camp. Her legacy remains in the hearts and activities of many local churches and volunteers. Camp Viola, through Troup County churches, has also provided weekend and holiday camp activities during the school year. Many churches in Troup County host weeks of summer camp at Camp Viola, and others partner with the camp through regular donations and volunteering for workdays and other projects. Today Camp Viola continues its mission through the support of the faith community and other financial partners.
