About
STARBASE Robins offers hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) education that includes activities such as a Robotics Academy and LEGO Robotics tournaments. The program also runs summer Teacher Academies that provide training in STEM topics. STARBASE Robins is part of the Department of Defense (DoD) STARBASE educational program.
STARBASE Robins was the 18th STARBASE site to begin operations, with its inaugural classes in 1996. Since its beginning, STARBASE Robins has graduated over 17,500 students from its programs, including the school year program and summer academies. STARBASE Robins produced its first Robotics Academy in July of 2003, and training in STEM has also been done through summer Teacher Academies. Department of Defense (DoD) STARBASE states that it offers a positive, proven approach to engendering excitement and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.). STARBASE Robins is one of numerous civil-military cooperation initiatives approved by Major General Robert A. McIntosh, United States Air Force, Chief of Air Force Reserve. The national STARBASE effort was supported by leaders including Major General Robert A. McIntosh, Barbara Koscak, Brigadier General David Arendts (Ret.), Lieutenant Colonel Rico Racosky, Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, Lieutenant General John Conway, Georgia Senator Sam Nunn, and President George H. Bush. Community involvement at STARBASE Robins has included volunteers working in local schools and at LEGO Robotics tournaments. Testimonials describe STARBASE Robins as “the most awesome experience I have ever had the privilege of being part of,” and note that STARBASE 2.0 has been a very positive experience for volunteers who feel they have learned from the students.
