Since its launch in 2004, Savannah Children's Theatre has produced over 375 plays and musicals for the Savannah community. Its theatre field trip program “Let’s Put on a Play” has served over 154,000 students across Georgia and South Carolina, and according to audience polls, 70% of those students experienced live theatre for the first time during those visits. The organization is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization and has purchased the STAR Castle Property to transform it into a new vibrant performing arts center, and it is seeking Founding 50 donors. The program states that activities are divided by age, not ability, so each class is customized based on the needs of the students present, and it is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse environment where all are welcome. The mission of Savannah Children's Theatre is to inspire, educate and entertain children and families through the experience of live theatre, both on and off the stage, and its vision is to build a community of artists who honor lifelong learning and creative growth in the Coastal Empire and beyond.
The leadership team includes Board President Donna Epstein and Board Members Kayla Johnson, Joe Steffen, Beckie Templeton, Chris Bass, Shalonda Mullgrav, Len James, Laura May Bennett, and LeeAnn Kole. Parent and student comments about Savannah Children's Theatre camps and classes describe patient and kind camp counselors, welcoming and fun teachers, and instructors who are kind and explain choreography and singing in an easy way, as well as positive interactions between staff and children during classes and field trips.
