Hands and Hearts for Horses was founded in 2000 with two volunteer teachers, Karen and Terrell, and three therapy horses. The co-founders are Terrell Singletary and Karen Leabo Singletary, and Martha serves on the board of directors. Terrell and Martha became certified therapeutic riding instructors under NARHA in 2000. A physical therapist uses horses as a benefit to clients and helped the organization move to accepting more physically challenged riders. The program provides unique therapeutic services to individuals with a variety of special needs, including autism spectrum disorder (including Asperger syndrome), Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injuries. Families lease the property to the program for $1 a year.

The mission of Hands and Hearts for Horses is to celebrate the unique gifts and challenges of each individual, encouraging growth through the benefits of therapeutic horsemanship and human relationships. The community of Thomasville has provided financial support, improvements to the farm, avenues for volunteering, and constant encouragement, and the organization serves the people of South Georgia and North Florida.

A parent shared that their daughter has been riding at Hands and Hearts for Horses for well over a decade and that it has always been her favorite part of the week. In this testimonial, the parent describes how, at the end of her lesson on her horse Eclipse, the rider often turns Eclipse in the opposite direction and rides off kicking and laughing when told it is time to go back to the barn, and the parent expresses gratitude for the joy she has at Hands and Hearts for Horses.
